Project Description: Christchurch School of Gymnastics Uniform Assets

Client: Christchurch School of Gymnastics

Project Overview:

Daniel Price Art & Design has been involved in designing uniform apparel for the Christchurch School of Gymnastics. Notable uniform pieces have been the uniform polos worn by competitive gymnastics coaches from 2020 in interclub meets and leotards worn by the Senior Open Men's gymnasts.

Design Challenge:

The primary challenge was to develop apparel pieces that could be easily recognizable on the floor, was fashionable and dynamic, and that was consistent with the main colors of the club. For the gymnasts uniform, the design had to be made within parameters of strict competition attire rules laid out by the National & International governing bodies of the sport.

Creative Solution:

Daniel Price Art & Design worked alongside gymnasts and coaches who would be wearing the uniforms to pull together designs that spoke to prospective wearers - as well as drawing on visual elements derived in the opening of the new gym & 50th Anniversary in order to tie the unveiling of the new uniforms to the physicality of the new gym and the history of the club.

Uniform items that were created were:

  • Coaches Polos: These drew on adjusted forms of the design used for some of the 50th Anniversary merchandise. This was to honor the legacy of competitive coaching at the club by creating a physical bridge and visual stamp to the event memorializing the club's history, which coaches could carry forth alongside their gymnasts.
  • Senior Open Men's Leotard Uniform: Daniel Price Art & Design worked alongside the gymnasts that were to be wearing this uniform piece to create a design that was complimentary to the dynamic movement of the sport. A fashionable design that gymnasts felt proud to wear when competing, that would look good throughout a wide variety of movements. The comfort, and pride of the gymnasts wearing the piece was paramount to the success of the project and took the main priority.

Project Results:

The project was successful in producing uniform assets that looked fashionable and that coaches & gymnasts enjoyed wearing. The designs effectively evoked dynamism and were bold enough to spot from a distance. Making it easy and visually appealing for spectators and members to watch and identify teammates and coaches within the busy environment of a competition meet.
